There is something truly magical about waking up to the sound of the Pacific Ocean gently lapping against the shore. Here at Papaya Villa, we believe that a romantic getaway in Vanuatu should be more than just a holiday, it should be an immersion into another world. When Shoran and I personally welcome you to our little slice of paradise, we aren't just giving you a key; we’re inviting you into our home, a secluded accommodation in Vanuatu where privacy isn’t just a luxury, it’s our way of life.
While you could easily spend your entire stay tucked away in our 1.6 kilometers of lush tropical gardens (and many of our guests do!), Efate island is bursting with hidden gems just waiting to be explored. Whether you’re looking for the vibrant pulse of the local culture or the serene silence of an underwater world, we’ve put together the ultimate guide for your island adventures.
A Taste of the Real Vanuatu: Port Vila Markets

If you want to feel the heartbeat of the islands, you absolutely must visit the Port Vila Markets. Located right on the waterfront, this bustling hub is open 24 hours a day from Monday morning until Saturday noon. It is a sensory explosion! Think of the scent of fresh saffron mixed with the sweet, heavy aroma of sun-ripened mangoes and the earthy fragrance of root vegetables pulled straight from the volcanic soil.
We always recommend heading there early. Why? Because that’s when the "peeps" are out, and the produce is at its peak! You’ll find stalls overflowing with seasonal treasures, wild raspberries in September, or the most incredible passion fruit from March to May.
Pro Tip: Don’t leave without trying the local street food. Look for the lap lap (a savory pudding made from coconut, sweet potato, and meat) or tuluk (deliciously steamed tapioca dough filled with pork). They are usually only 500-600 Vatu and are a total labor of love prepared by local mamas. Who doesn’t like something authentic and delicious straight from a traditional prep?
Treasures and Trinkets: Handicrafts and Duty Free

Just a short stroll from the main produce area, you’ll find the Port Vila Handicraft markets. This is where you find the real deal. We’re talking hand-woven baskets with intricate patterns, delicate shell necklaces that capture the light of the reef, and powerful woodcarvings. These aren’t just souvenirs; they are pieces of Vanuatu’s soul.
After you’ve found your perfect keepsake, it might be time for a little "treat yourself" moment. Port Vila is famous for its duty-free shopping. Places like Fung Kuei and Prouds are legendary here. Whether you’re looking for a top-shelf bottle of gin to enjoy on your private deck at Papaya Villa or perhaps a new piece of tech or French perfume, the savings are fab. It’s the perfect way to add a little extra sparkle to your beachfront bed and breakfast Vanuatu experience!
Underwater Wonders: Snorkeling at Top Rock

For those who love the water as much as we do, a trip to Top Rock in Saama village is non-negotiable. It’s about an hour's drive from us, but oh boy, is it worth it! This place features Vanuatu’s very first snorkel trail, and the technical care that has gone into preserving this reef is something we really admire.
The visibility? WOW. It is often crystal clear and cold in the deep pockets, giving you a front-row seat to a vibrant marine world. You’ll see herbivore fish darting between coral species, and if you’re lucky, a green sea turtle might glide past you. There have even been dugong sightings! The entry fee is around 1,500 VUV, and every cent goes back into the local community and reef conservation. It’s a beautiful example of the barefoot eco experience we champion here.
Friday Night Fever: The Beach Bar Fire Show

After a day of exploring, there is no better way to spend a Friday evening than at The Beach Bar in Mele for their famous Fire Show. Yep, it’s as spectacular as it sounds! The show usually starts around 7:00 pm, but you’ll want to get there by 5:30 pm to snag a good seat and perhaps a cold beverage.
The energy is infectious. The performers use fire poi and staffs to create mesmerizing patterns against the darkening sky. It’s a mix of contemporary beats and traditional rhythms that will have you tapping your feet in the sand. The best part? The show is free (though donations for the villagers are highly encouraged). It’s raw, it’s passionate, and it’s a total "must-see."
Turquoise Dreams: Blue Lagoon and Eton Beach

Finally, for the ultimate romantic dip, you have to visit the Blue Lagoon and Eton Beach. The Blue Lagoon is a wonderful quirk of nature: a mix of cold limestone fresh-water springs and tidal salt water. The result? A shade of blue so vivid you’ll think someone turned the saturation up on the world! There are rope swings for the adventurous, but we prefer just floating and soaking in the tranquility.
Just down the road is Eton Beach, famous for its powdery white sand and emerald waters. There’s usually a small entry fee (bring some Vatu for the "honesty box" or the local attendants), which helps keep this pristine spot looking like a postcard. It’s the perfect place to spread out a towel, crack open a coconut, and just be.
