There is a very specific sound that happens the moment you arrive at Papaya Villa. It isn’t the waves (though they are definitely there, whispering in the background). It isn’t the wind in the palms. It’s the thud-thud of leather soles or rubber flip-flops hitting the floor of your villa for the last time.
And then? Silence. Or rather, the soft, grounded "squish" of toes meeting white sand and cool, shaded garden soil.
We’re big believers in the power of going barefoot. In fact, we’ve built our entire "barefoot eco experience" around the idea that the less you have between you and the earth, the better you feel. Have you ever noticed how your shoulders drop about three inches the second you kick off your shoes? It’s like a physical "off" switch for the stress of the real world.
At Papaya Villa, we don't just suggest you lose the shoes, we practically insist on it!
The 1.6-Kilometer Sensory Journey
When Shoran and I first looked at this land, we knew we had something special. We’re talking 1.6 kilometers of lush, rambling tropical gardens that wind their way along the oceanfront. It’s a lot of ground to cover, but trust me, it’s best explored one step at a time.
Imagine waking up, the sun just starting to peek over the horizon, and walking out of your villa. Your feet meet the dew-damp grass, it’s crisp and cool. As you wander down the sand paths toward the water, the texture changes. You feel the smooth, sun-warmed volcanic rocks and the soft, powdery grit of the beach.
It’s a sensory feast, peeps! … and because we’ve kept everything so secluded, you won’t see another soul. Well, except maybe for our gardeners, but they’re experts at being "invisible" so you can have your private paradise all to yourself.
Total Seclusion: Your Own Private Piece of Eton
Who doesn't like having a whole beach to themselves? At most resorts, you have to wake up at 6:00 AM just to snag a sun lounger with a half-decent view. Not here. At Papaya Villa, privacy isn't a luxury; it's the baseline.
Our guests often tell us they feel like the only people left on Earth. You can spend your entire day wandering from your villa to the lagoon, to the coral reefs, and back again without ever needing to put on a pair of shoes, or a "public" face. It’s just you, the ocean, and the sound of the Pacific.
Is it worth the trek to get here? Oh, absolutely. When you’re standing on your own private beach, watching the turquoise water lap at the shore, the rest of the world feels like a very distant memory. It’s fab, truly.
The Eco-Experience (Without the "Roughing It" Part)
We get asked a lot about what "eco" actually means for us. Does it mean no power? Nope. Does it mean lukewarm showers? Definitely not!
For us, the barefoot eco experience is about living in harmony with this gorgeous island. We run on solar power (thank you, tropical sun!), and our villas are designed to catch the natural sea breezes. There’s something incredibly romantic about falling asleep to the sound of the ocean through louvered windows rather than the hum of a clinical air conditioner.
It’s about being grounded. It’s about realizing that you don't need a massive concrete resort to feel pampered. You just need a comfortable bed, a view that takes your breath away, and the freedom to walk from your room to the reef in ten seconds flat.
Meet the "Security" Team: Dora & Benny
Of course, no stay at Papaya Villa is complete without meeting the real bosses. While Shoran and I handle the cooking and the hosting, Dora and Benny: our resident Chihuahuas: handle the heavy lifting. And by "heavy lifting," I mean finding the best patches of sunlight for their afternoon naps.
Dora is our self-appointed head of security. She’ll likely give you a tiny, enthusiastic greeting when you arrive, just to let you know she’s on the job. Benny is more of a "consultant." He specializes in looking cute and making sure no fallen crumbs from the breakfast table go to waste.
They’re a huge part of the family here, and they’ve perfected the art of the island life. If you see them trot past your villa on their way to the beach, follow them! They know exactly where the best spots are.
A Taste of the Island: Saffron, Salt, and Seafood
You can't talk about bliss without talking about the food. Shoran and I take a lot of pride in what we serve at our guest table. Because we’re a true Bed & Breakfast, we don’t do generic buffet lines. Everything is personal.
Imagine this: you’ve spent the morning snorkeling on the reef (again, barefoot until the fins go on!). You’re hungry, and the scent of saffron and wood smoke is drifting through the garden.
WOW. We use the freshest ingredients we can find: often sourced from the Port Vila fresh food markets.
Think flaky salt, crystal clear flavors, and dishes that reflect the vibrant colors of Vanuatu. Whether it’s a seafood paella or a zesty papaya salad, we want every meal to be a highlight of your stay.
Why We Love What We Do
People often ask us why we chose this life. Why run a B&B on a secluded stretch of coast in Vanuatu?
The answer is simple: we love the connection. When you stay at a big hotel, you’re just a room number. When you stay at Papaya Villa, you’re a guest in our home. We love sharing our "best kept secret" with people who truly appreciate the quiet, the romance, and the beauty of nature.
It’s a labor of love, for sure. From maintaining the 1.6km of gardens to experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, every part of Papaya Villa has our fingerprints on it. We want you to feel that personal touch from the moment you arrive until the moment you (reluctantly) put your shoes back on to head to the airport.
