If you’ve ever stayed with us here at Papaya Villa, you know that we are all about that authentic, barefoot luxury experience. We aren't your typical resort; we’re a labor of love set on 1.6 kilometers of pristine oceanfront. But even in our secluded paradise, there is one "city" adventure I always recommend to our guests: a trip to the Port Vila Fresh Food Markets.
Honestly, peeps, it is a sensory explosion! Imagine the scent of sweet, ripe pineapples mingling with the earthy aroma of freshly harvested ginger and the salty tang of the nearby ocean… WOW. It’s vibrant, it’s bustling, and it’s where the true heart of Vanuatu beats. Who doesn’t like wandering through a maze of colorful stalls while the morning sun warms your skin?
Why the Market is Our Favorite Morning Ritual
When Shoran and I aren’t busy greeting guests or tending to our lush tropical gardens, you might find us scouting for the best ingredients for your dinner. We take a lot of pride in our personalized dining. We don’t just order from a wholesale truck; we go to the source!
The Port Vila Market (also known as the Marché de Port Vila) is open 6 days weekly from Monday morning right through to Saturday at noon. It’s a testament to their hard work and the incredible community spirit here.

Navigating the Rainbow of Produce
Walking into the market for the first time can be a little overwhelming: in the best way possible! The colors are just… fab. You’ll see piles of bright orange papayas (my absolute favorite!), stacks of green coconuts, and bundles of long, leafy island cabbage.
What should you look for? Here’s my insider list:
- The Pineapples: They are world-famous for a reason. So sweet they’re almost like candy.
- Vanuatu Bananas: Forget those uniform supermarket bananas. Here, you’ll find at least six varieties, including "apple bananas" that actually have a hint of tartness.
- Pamplemousse: A giant local grapefruit that is surprisingly sweet and not bitter at all.
- The Nuts: Look for little bags of nagae nuts or roasted peanuts. They are the perfect snack for your afternoon lounging back at the villa.
I always take one for the team and "test" a few samples when the mamas offer them. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it! Have you ever tasted a fruit so fresh it was literally picked that morning? It’s a game-changer…

Pro Tips for Your Market Adventure
If you’re planning to head into Port Vila from our secluded spot, here are a few tips to make your trip smooth:
- Bring Small Change: The mamas accept Vatu (VT) in smaller denominations. It makes life easier for everyone!
- Timing is Everything: Early morning (around 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM) is when the produce is freshest and the atmosphere is electric.
- Say "Halo!": A simple "Halo" and a smile go a long way. The people of Vanuatu are some of the friendliest on Earth. Ask them about their produce: they love to share their knowledge!
- Eco-Friendly Shopping: We are a barefoot eco-experience, so we encourage you to bring your own reusable bag. Many stalls will wrap your items in natural leaves, which is just so cool!
A Labor of Love in Every Bite
Why do we encourage our guests to leave their private beach for a few hours to visit a market? Because we believe that travel is about connection. When you buy a hand-woven basket or a bunch of bananas from a local farmer, you’re becoming a part of the Vanuatu story.
At Papaya Villa, we pour our hearts into everything we do: from the way we hand-prepare your breakfast to the way we’ve curated our 1.6 kilometers of gardens. Supporting the local markets is just another way we stay true to our roots and ensure you get the most authentic experience possible.
After a morning of exploring the bustling stalls, there is nothing better than returning to the peace and quiet of your villa. Imagine sitting on your deck, peeling a fresh papaya, and watching the sun dip toward the coral reef… absolute perfection.
