Is it a lot of work to maintain? Yep. But when our guests tell us they didn't see another soul all day except for the occasional gardener waving from a distance, we know it’s worth every second.
The Barefoot Eco Experience: Living Off-Grid (and Loving It!)
We are 100% off-grid and incredibly proud of it! But don't worry, "off-grid" doesn't mean "roughing it." It means being mindful and connected to the environment around you. It's about that authentic barefoot eco experience.
We harvest energy from the sun and store it in our battery system, providing 240 volts of renewable energy to the villa. We even built our own enclosed septic system from scratch, now that was a project! We purchased the license for the technology and got our hands dirty making it happen.
One of the things I love most is our water. We have two sources: harvested rainwater and ground water pumped from a natural aquifer that runs right under the villa. This ground water is potable, crystal clear, and cold… It is my favorite! There is nothing like the taste of pure, chilled water straight from the earth.
We do ask our guests to be mindful, no dishwashers or hair dryers here, as they are absolute energy hogs! But who needs a hair dryer when you have a warm tropical breeze? It’s all part of the Papaya Villa experience. It’s about slowing down and realizing how little you actually need to feel pampered. The snorkeling right off our beach is, quite simply, WOW. You can step off the sand and into a world of vibrant coral and tropical fish. The water is so clear you can see the ripples in the sand on the floor of the lagoon. We used dead coral from our own coastline to build the walls of the villa, and even the render on the walls is made from sand from our very own beach! It grounds the building in the land, literally.
Who doesn't like having a whole lagoon to themselves? It’s the ultimate romantic backdrop for a morning swim or a sunset stroll.
Superb Dining: From Our Garden to Your Plate
Seclusion shouldn't mean starving! While we offer total privacy, Shoran and I are always on hand to prepare superb, personalized meals. We treat our guests like friends, and that means the food has to be fab.
Breakfast is served in the ‘Nakamal’ or right down by the beach. Imagine waking up to the scent of fresh tropical fruit, the crunch of flaky salt on perfectly prepared eggs, and the rich aroma of local coffee. We sort our waste every day and use the organic material for compost in our vegetable garden: so that tomato in your salad? It might have been grown right here!
